Hartzell already known from the 1860 Storrs Township Hamilton County Ohio Census - age 58, born in Virginia, and keeper of a boarding house, and the David A. Hartzell in the 1840 Cincinnati City Directory - born in Virginia.) From Cincinnati Pioneer Association publication: Born May 23, 1802 in Bedford County, Virginia. Came to Ohio in 1804 (age 2). Now thought to be a son of Abraham and Eve (Houtz) Hartzell, who were married May 23, 1796 in Franklin County, Virginia. BUT other sources say they were married in Bedford County, Virginia. The northern part of Franklin County, north of the Blackwater River, was formerly Bedford County until 1785. Abraham bought land in Montgomery County Ohio in 1805. David A. Hartzell shows up in an 1835 Dayton Ohio (Montgomery County) court case where someone owed him money. He is in partnership with George Sinks, thought to be the son of the George Sinks whose homeplace is where the Adam Hartzell family headed when they arrived in Montgomery County Ohio in 1815. I think my ancestor David Hartzell knew his cousin David A. Hartzell in Montgomery County Ohio. They were only 3 years apart in age, and could have been like brothers. GEORGE HARTZELL "JR." (Born 1812 Montgomery County Ohio, married Margaret Yaughey there in 1834. Erroneously shown in "The Hartzell Ancestral Line" document as a son of Adam Hartzell, but was born in Ohio before Adam's family arrived in late 1815. Father's name is George "Sr.".) If I was to place George "Sr." into the family, I would say he was a previously unknown brother of my ancestor Adam Hartzell. Fourth cousin George Nieman, descended from Adam's son John, independently arrived at the same conclusion. I also found the same conclusion in my old notes. Most of Adam's brothers and sisters migrated from Franklin County, Virginia to Montgomery County Ohio by 1812. Adam's brother Abraham was in a group of early arrivals in 1798, and bought land in 1805. Jim Hartzell of Piqua Ohio reports that when custodianship of George "Jr." took place in 1827, Abrahams's wife had something to do with the family of Joseph Watson taking him in. George "Jr." would have been a nephew of Abraham. We feel Abraham wasn't home much because he was off exploring the frontier. They were only 3 years apart in age, and could have been like brothers. June 25, 2011 - George Nieman has come up with new clues, including Y-DNA, that George "Sr." could be a son of John Philip Hartzell (1771-1823) of Menallan Township, Adams County, PA. John Philip was a grandson of Hans Georg Hartzell Jr (1714-1762), and son of Johann George Hartzell (1749-1824). Menallan Township is just north of Arendtsville, where my ancestor Philip Hartzell had lived in the 1780's. This family connection would explain how George Sr found out about Montgomery County, OH and moved there before 1812. Importantly, George Nieman observed that Jim Hartzell of Piqua Ohio has the same DNA "mutation" as a direct descendant of Philip 1771. FRANKLIN VS. BEDFORD COUNTY, VA Some sources have the marriage of Abraham Hartzell and Eva Houtz (May 23, 1796), and others, in Bedford County, Virginia, while others say Franklin County, Virginia. According to "The History of Pittslyvania County, Virginia", page 99, it says the part of Franklin County north of the Blackwater River was formerly Bedford County before 1785. On my home page, under MAPS, are links to maps of 1770 and 1780 Virginia, showing the early structure of counties. EVA HOUTZ - married Abraham Hartzell, 1796 At http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=AHN&db=lacor&id=I52311, item 27, is the parents and siblings of Eva Houtz. Her death date & location is unknown. This information has to do with resolving the life of Abraham Hartzell, and whether he had children. Eva Houtz was the daughter of John Christian and Barbara (Emmert) Houtz. Her siblings were:
John Christian Houtz, b. 1768 Berks County, PA; m. Susannah Kline: d. 1847 Roanoake, VA. http://emmertfamily.org/emmert/d1.html shows Eva as "Maria Eva Houtz", born 1780. |
